One night a truck driver named Thomas (Luke Ford) arrives in Dampier, Western Australia. After entering the town pub he saw the silhouette of a group of people, one of whom was holding a gun. And after realizing it, he witnessed the murder and was rushed to the next room. There saw a group of people who are trying to put a dog that looks sick. Can not bring themselves to carry out the executions, the men and Thomas finally returned to the bar.
Excise Jack Collins (Noah Taylor) has told a story about a dog named Red Dog (Koko) at one time, arrived in Dampier. 

With his arrival, the dog tried to make friends with many employees Hamersley Iron,
which has a major iron ore mines as well as the ongoing excavation. Various miners told related to the Red Dog to Thomas, but the majority stated that Red Dog is a dog for everyone, no one has become the official owner.

The man then tells about an American named John Grant (Josh Lucas), who is hosting a true Red. Was John, a bus driver for Hamersley Iron, she began dating a woman named Nancy (Rachael Taylor) who is a secretary at Hamersley Iron. After living in Dampier for two years, John proposed to Nancy. On the night of the engagement, John tells Red Dog to stay until he returned from the caravan Nancy. The next morning, John drove his motorcycle from the caravan Nancy, but he was killed in an accident while traveling home.

In a state of shock due to an accident that befell John, Rachael and the people have forgotten Hamersley Red Dog. Unbeknownst to them, he is still in place of John who told him to stay. After three weeks of the Red decided to look for John. First he looked at Hamersley Iron, later to the bar and also other places that may be visited John. Almost all the places did not escape the observation of Red. He was even rumored to have been caught by foreign vessels from Japan in her efforts. Finally, with a sense of sadness finally he decided to return to Dampier. How is his fate, after returning home? Will he find a new host and a faithful as well as the first?
